Education would be much more effective if its purpose was to ensure that by the time they leave school every boy and girl should know how much they do not know, and be imbued with a lifelong desire to know it. ~William Haley
Job Seeking Steps Timeline
1. Decide where and what you want to teach.
-
Please be flexible, if possible, on the location of your job. One of the main reasons students do not find a job is because they are not open to rural locations.
-
Have an idea of what grades and subjects you would like to teach. The ability to teach multiple subjects makes you more marketable.
2. Write a resume and register on YCareers (www.byui.edu/ycareers).
-
It is highly recommended you visit the Teacher Career Services Office in Hinckley 325 or call 208-496-1819 for help with your resume. You can also email your resume to http://www.byui.edu/teacherplacement@byui.edu if you are not able to visit the office.
-
The resume should be updated as needed. A cover letter and philosophy of education letter can be included on YCareers.
3. Prepare for the job search.
- Find job fairs and contact the districts/schools in the locations where you want to teach.
- Visit with the Teacher Career Services Office for other teacher fairs and contacts.
4. Practice for the Interviews.
- Prepare an "elevator speech", a 30 second summary of your abilities.- Review the interview questions and prepare for the "tough" questions.
-
Research the schools and prepare questions to ask in the interview.
-
Practice interviews with a friend, spouse, in the mirror, or the teacher placement office.
-
Remember to send a thank you letter to the recruiter immediately after the interview.
5. Review your Teacher Placement File.
-
The file will include your student teaching reports, graduation report, and transcript and will not be sent until all reports are received by the Student Teaching Office.
-
For information about your file see the web page: (http://www.byui.edu/TeacherCareerServices/Menu/FAQs.htm).
6. Keep in Touch.
-
Inform the Teacher Career Services Office if you receive a job or change your address.
-
Let us help if you have problems with your resume, interviewing, finding contacts, finding job leads, need encouragement, or anything else.
-
Contact the Teacher Career Services Office to change your email address. Your BYU-I email will last eight months (two semesters) after your graduation.
7. Don't Forget Us.
- As an alum, you can use the Teacher Career Services Office at any time. We will send your teacher placement file to you four years after your graduation. It will be yours to update, change, and share with future employers.
- Please remember to send us job openings in your schools. You are the pioneers of the BYU-Idaho College of Education, you set the path for future education graduates.
